Description: Jaroslav Gebr Original Painting of the "Double-Eyed Man" for Ripley's Believe It or Not! (ABC TV, 1982-1986). Large original painting accomplished in gouache on 29.75" x 38.25" board featuring Liu Ch'ung "the Double-Eyed Man" by Jaroslav Gebr. The artwork was painted for use on Ripley's Believe It or Not! television show hosted by Jack Palance, but was ultimately not used. Gebr had painted a variation of this artwork that was used in the brochures for Ripley's Believe It or Not! museums in the 1970's. The museums had wax figures of Liu Ch'ung, also known as Liu Min, who was born with two pupils in each eye. Despite his abnormality, he became Governor of Shansi, China, and Minister of State in 995 AD. Jaroslav Gebr (1926-2013) was an artist originally from Czechoslovakia, working for Capitol Records from 1954-1961 and then by 1961, Jaroslav's first film work would be Ada with Dean Martin and Psycho with Alfred Hitchcock. Though working on many Oscar and Emmy nominated productions, he is well known for creating the portraits for Rod Serling's Night Gallery. The piece has a 1" painted black border with "Jerry Jaroslav Gebr" and phone number printed in black ink on the verso. Exhibiting some warping with material loss on the verso, possible from previous display mounting, some scuffing and handling. Provenance: Consigned by the Gebr Art Archive. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
